OLIVIER DE SAGAZAN: TRANSFIGURATION

July 2014, one-night-only live performance, Culture Industries Association (CIA), Hong Kong

“I AM APPALLED TO SEE HOW MOST PEOPLE SEEM TO FIND IT MUNDANE AND NORMAL TO BE ALIVE.” - O. de Sagazan

De Sagazan’s intricate existential performances, which he has been developing for more than 20 years, employ hybrid practices that integrate painting, photography, sculpture, and live-performance. Using and building with layers of clay he would paint his own face and body in order to transform, disfigure, and deconstruct his own figure, revealing an animalistic human who is seeking to break way from the physical world. At once disquieting and deeply moving, the Transfiguration series encompasses a body of work which collapse the boundaries between the physical, intellectual, spiritual and animalistic senses.
